Parsha - Ekev

In this week's parsha, Moshe continues with a recap of the past forty years of wandering in the wilderness, remembering the occasions when they rebelled against God and were punished for their actions. Moses explains that until now they were dependent upon God for all their needs but now, as they prepare to enter the Promised Land they will be responsible for their future but must never forget the Divine goodness and guidance. Moses then concludes his second of three Discourses with a warning about the rewards and punishments that will come in the future depending on their adherence or lack of adherence to His laws and statutes. The Haftorah, the second of seven Haftorahs of Consolation, continues Isaiah's message of comfort and hope following Tisha B'av earlier this month.

We will also try to provide housing for anyone who would like to be able to walk to services.

Also remember that the parking lot will be available on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur for those who have a "handicapped sticker" or have difficulty walking. We have a limited number of spaces so please do not enter the parking lot unless you find it necessary,

UPCOMING EVENTS AT OUR TEMPLE

Our Sisterhood is sponsoring their ON GOING FOOD DRIVE. Please deposit your donated kosher sealed or canned foods in the box located outside our office in the lower lobby. Food will be delivered to Alix Rubinger Kosher Food Pantry.

Malka Sigal of the Young Israel of Bellmore is running a Summer Scholarship Blood Drive this coming Tuesday, August 26 from 3:30 PM to 9:00 PM at the YI. The summer months present a tremendous need for blood donors so remember, Blood is Life… Pass it on!

We will be exchanging information with the Young Israel as we continue our close relationships with other synagogues in our community.

Upcoming dates for the defensive driving course are Sept. 14 and Oct. 26. Classes start at 9:00 AM.

Through J-Learn a project of SAJES, the synagogues on the South Shore Of Long Island will sponsor two programs at Temple Israel of South Merrick located at 2655 Club House Road in Merrick. On Tuesday evening, September 16 Peter Pitzele will lead a discussion about Jonah's Journey, A Dramatical Portrayal of Life's Everyday Challenges and on the following Tuesday, September 23, J-Learn presents Spirituality & Song led by Debbie Friedman and Joe Septimus. Both sessions run from 7:30 to 9:15 PM and the cost is $20.00 each or $30.00 for both sessions. The Keter Shem Tov Dinner, scheduled for January 14, 2009, will be honoring the Honorable Diane Yatauro, Presiding Officer of the Nassau County Legislature and Jerry Laricchiuta, President of Local 830 of CSEA (Civil Service Employees Assn.) Please check your mail for more details as they become available.

The Fundraising Committee has been meeting but the response has not been overwhelming. This is one of the most important groups in our Temple and your help is very important - either with your time or your ideas. Please contact Martha Kreisel at librfmzk@yahoo.com or in the evening at 783-8401.
